Pilot Spots Drone Flying Close to His Passenger Plane

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- While approaching New York's JFK Airport, an Alitalia airlines captain spotted something unusual flying very close to his jet.

It was a drone aircraft.

The FBI says the unmanned drone came within 200 feet of the passenger plane. The co-pilot spotted it too.

The captain immediately called the tower. Here's what he said:

Tower: "What did you see?"

Pilot: "We saw a drone, a drone aircraft."

Tower: "Alitalia. Roger. What altitude did you see that aircraft?"

Pilot: "About 1,500."

The incident is now under investigation by the FAA and the FBI, which is asking for the public's help in finding the aircraft and its operator.

The plane landed safely.
