The suspect involved in the hit and run in New York that left a young couple and their baby dead is now in police custody.

Julio Acevedo, 44, was arrested Wednesday on charges of leaving the scene of the accident.

Police say he was going 60 miles per hour early Sunday when the BMW he was driving crashed into the side of a cab.

Nathan and Raizy Glauber, both 21, were killed.

Raizy was pregnant and she and her husband were going to the hospital because she wasn't feeling well.

The couple's baby was delivered by cesarean section at the hospital but died the next day.

The couple was from a close-knit ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.

Acevedo said he was fleeing a gunman when he slammed into the cab carrying the couple. He said he fled because he was afraid he would be killed.

However, police say there are no reports of shots being fired around that time.

The fatal crash occurred just after midnight on Saturday.

Police say Acevedo is cooperating and he's facing an extradition hearing Thursday to address his return to New York.
