Courtesy of NBCA former air force base south of Houston may turn into a spaceport.
The city's Airport Systems Director announced Thursday they have applied for a spaceport license for Ellington Field.
If the license is approved, the spacecrafts would launch horizontally from existing runways, and head towards the Gulf of Mexico and into the edge of space.
The edge of space travel would make long trips significantly shorter.
For instance, connecting Houston to Singapore would be just under three hours.
The cost of construction is expected to be anywhere from $28 million to $122 million dollars.
A licensed spaceport is under construction in New Mexico and the airport authority in Midland is also working to get a commercial space license.
