FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –
Junior
Tiffani McReynolds qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles to
lead the Baylor track and field team on the first day of the NCAA Indoor
Championships on Friday at the
Randal Tyson Track Center.
"Tiffani looked awesome as always," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We are excited to see what she can do in the finals tomorrow."
For
a third consecutive season, the Kansas City, Kan., product will earn
indoor All-American honors and have an opportunity to win a NCAA crown.
McReynolds won her heat, running
out of lane two, in a time of 8.08. That mark is her second-fastest of
the season and was the second-best in the preliminary rounds at the
event. It was also the fourth fastest time of the junior's career.
The 60-hurdle finals will begin on Saturday
at 6:20 p.m. McReynolds will have to get past Clemson's Brianna
Rollins, who had the fastest preliminary time of 7.82 and owns the
fastest time in the NCAA this year at 7.78.
Junior
Blake Heriot turned in his third-fastest time of the season and
personal-best on a banked track to finish third in his heat at 21.18 in
the 200-meters. That mark left
him in 12th-place overall and outside of the top eight competitors, who
qualified for the finals.
Senior
Everett Walker was also slated to compete in the 200-meters, but he
injured himself in practice earlier this week and was held out of the
competition.
In
the weight throw, Erin Atkinson opened Baylor's day by placing 11th.
The junior's first throw was her best as she uncorked a heave of 65-3.50
(19.90m). She fouled in her
second attempt and her third throw did not better her first. The throw
left Atkinson out of the finals as she was looking to earn All-American
honors for a second-straight year.
"Both
of our other competitors, Blake and Erin, were just a little bit off,"
Harbour said. "It would have been nice to get them into the finals, but tomorrow we have two more
individuals and our 4x400-meter team, who are ready to go."
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday
at the NCAA Indoor Championships with field events beginning at 2 p.m.
and running events starting at 6 p.m. Senior Skylar White
will open the action for Baylor with the shot put competition at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, freshman Felix Obi will compete in the triple jump at 6 p.m.
The 4x400-meter relay team will get its chance to compete at 8:25.
