BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday
in Belton, falling to Texas Lutheran 6-2 and 7-4. The losses drop UMHB
to 7-10 on the season and 0-3 in American Southwest Conference action,
while the Bulldogs improve to 14-5 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
The
Cru gained an early 1-0 lead on the Bulldogs when Zack Whiddon hit his
first homer of the season in the top of the first. Texas Lutheran
responded with four unanswered runs, scoring two runners in the top of
the second and two more in the top of the fourth. UMHB's Chase Burrow
scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth before a rain delay
halted the game temporarily. The game returned to action with the
Bulldogs adding one more run in the top of the seventh. UMHB had six
hits and six errors in the game while the Bulldogs had 10 hits and no
errors. Chance Ryan took the loss on the mound for the Cru, allowing
eight hits and striking out three batters.
Texas Lutheran put up
five unanswered runs to put a lead on the Cru in the second game,
scoring two runners in the first inning and three in the fourth. UMHB
responded in the fourth with an RBI double from Tyler Taute. The Cru
scored again in the fifth when Josh Cruz hit his first homer of the
season and in the sixth with a two-RBI single from Chase Burrow. The
Bulldogs put up two more runs in the eighth to secure the win for Texas
Lutheran. UMHB had 12 hits to Texas Lutheran's ten in the game. Both
teams recorded one error apiece. Nick Bergmann took the loss on the
mount for the Cru, allowing five runs and striking out two batters.
Burrow
and Whiddon both recorded a team-high three hits while Cruz, Seth
Mogavero and Chris Florack each added two. UMHB will return to action
next weekend at Howard Payne with a 2 p.m. game on Friday, March 15th and a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 16th.
