Local Grocery Store Damaged by Yesterday's Storm

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- A roof and ceiling ripped off it's structure.

Last night's severe weather hit David's Supermarket in Hamilton County the hardest.

Now the Hamilton community is rallying together over the damage.

Shelves once filled with fresh produce were cleaned out and every perishable item thrown away.

One of Hamilton's only grocery stores, David's Supermarket, lost their roof and ceiling in the storm Saturday night.

Debra Applewhite has worked there for four years and says that the storm took more than just a grocery store, it took away a second home.

"One min I'm home and the next minute this happens," she said.

Steve Gividen was working when the storm came through.

Gividen said, "I've never been so scared in my life, I'm a big guy and I'll admit it, I thought I was going to die."

People who were in the store when the storm came through said that all of the damage was done in only ten minutes and it could take 6-8 weeks to open the doors to the public again.

It happened around 8:00 Saturday night but luckily not one person was hurt.

Word of the damage traveled fast through the town and firefighters stayed up all night to secure the store.

On a Sunday, employees still came in to help clean what they say is one of the most important places in town.

A small silver lining for a community much stronger than any storm.

David's Supermarket is estimated to reopen in 6-8 weeks.
