NEW YORK –
Baylor senior point guard Pierre Jackson picked up first-team All-Big 12 honors from the Associate Press on Monday, while freshman Isaiah Austin was named to the AP's second team and junior Cory Jefferson
garnered honorable mention.
Jackson
is the fourth player in program history to earn first-team All-Big 12
honors, joining Terry Black (2001), Curtis Jerrells (2008) and
LaceDarius Dunn (2011). He and Dunn are the only
players in Baylor history to be named to the All-Big 12 second team in
one season and return to earn first-team honors the following year.
Jackson
leads the Big 12 in scoring (19.4 ppg) and assists (6.6 apg), placing
him on track to become the fifth player to lead a power-6 conference in
scoring and assists in the last 24 years.
No Big 12 player has ever led the league in scoring and assists.
Austin
is the first freshman in BU history to be named second-team All-Big 12.
He ranks second in the Big 12 with 8.8 rebounds per game, third with 10
double-doubles, fourth with 1.6 blocks
per game and 11th with 13.6 points per game. Austin is the nation's only freshman from a power-6 conference with 10 double-doubles on the year.
Jefferson,
a fourth-year junior who made only one start in 55 games over his first
two seasons, has started all 31 games for the Bears this season. He
leads the Big 12 in field goal percentage
(58.6), ranks second in blocks (2.0 bpg), fourth in rebounding (8.2
rpg), fourth in double-doubles (9) and 13th in scoring (12.1 ppg).
Jefferson
has scored more than twice as many points and grabbed more than twice
as many rebounds this season than in his first two years as a Bear
combined. He has 351 points and 248 rebounds
in 31 games this year after recording 148 points and 115 rebounds over
55 games in his first two seasons.
Jackson, Austin and Jefferson were also named to the coaches' All-Big 12 teams released on Sunday. Jackson picked up second-team honors, Austin was named to the third team and All-Rookie team,
and Jefferson again garnered honorable mention.
No. 6 seed Baylor takes on third-seeded Oklahoma State at 8:30 p.m. CT Thursday in the last quarterfinal game at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. The game will be
televised on Big 12 Network from Kansas City's Sprint Center.
