(KCEN) -- Texas could pass a bill to lower the penalties if a person is caught with a small amount of marijuana.
Today at the state capitol a hearing was held to decide if jail time should be removed for the possession of small amounts of marijuana.
Under a new law, if an individual is found with an ounce or less of pot they would only receive a $500 fine.
Currently the possession up to two ounces of marijuana is a Class B misdemeanor.
And that's punishable by up to a $2,000 fine, 180 days in jail and a drivers license suspension.
