ST. LOUIS –
Baylor
senior point guard Pierre Jackson was named the District VII Player of
the Year, and freshman Isaiah Austin joined him on the All-District
team, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced
Tuesday. Jackson is the first player in Baylor history to be named USBWA District Player of the Year.
Baylor
has at least one all-district selection in six consecutive seasons,
including five all-district honorees over the last two years. Jackson is
the fourth player in program history to earn
all-district honors in consecutive seasons, joining Darryl Middleton
(1987-88), Lawrence Roberts (2002-03) and Curtis Jerrells (2008-09).
District
VII includes all Division I basketball programs in Texas, Louisiana and
Arkansas. Jackson and Austin were the only all-district honorees among
the four Texas Big 12 teams. Baylor has
had nine all-district honorees in the last six years after earning
seven all-district honors in a 21-year span from 1987 through 2007.
Jackson,
who earned first-team All-Big 12 honors from the AP and Big 12 Radio
Broadcasters Association, became the fourth player in program history to
earn first-team All-Big 12 honors.
Jackson ranks 13th nationally and leads the Big 12 with 6.6 assists per game, and he ranks 22nd
nationally and tops in the Big 12 with 19.4 points per game. He's one of
only two players ranked in the nation's top 25 in both scoring and
assists, and he's on track to become the first player to lead a power-6
conference in scoring and assists since Arizona's Jason Terry in
1998-99. No Big 12 player has ever led the league in
scoring and assists.
Austin,
who is the first freshman in BU history to be named second-team All-Big
12, ranks second in the Big 12 with 8.8 rebounds per game, third with
10 double-doubles, fourth with 1.6 blocks
per game and 11th with 13.6 points per game. Austin is the nation's only freshman from a power-6 conference with 10 double-doubles on the year.
No. 6 seed Baylor takes on third-seeded Oklahoma State at 8:30 p.m. CT Thursday in the last quarterfinal game at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. The game will be
televised on Big 12 Network from Kansas City's Sprint Center.
