Black Smoke on Second Day of Voting

Posted: Updated:

Black smoke came out of the Sistine Chapel Wednesday on the second day of voting, indicting no agreement on a new pope.

The smoke was seen around 5:30 a.m. central time.

A hundred and fifteen Roman Catholic cardinals have been in lock down since Tuesday afternoon.

They will now continue their discussion into Wednesday afternoon local time.

The smoke was created by the burning of the ballot papers the cardinals voted on.

Chemical cartridges were added to ensure the smoke did not appear white, a sign that a decision has been reached.
