Boeing's plan for a redesigned battery system for the 787 Dreamliner is now approved by U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA has approved limited test flights for two 787 aircraft which will have prototypes of the new battery system.
"We won't allow the plane to return to service unless we're satisfied that the new design ensures the safety of the aircraft and its passengers," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.
In January all 787's in commercial service were grounded after a series of problems with the jet's lithium-ion batteries.
