(KCEN) -- There is now some good news in the fight against HIV.

New evidence shows a functional cure of the virus is possible, if treated early.

Fourteen patients treated with antiviral medication within weeks of their infection now are showing no signs of the disease.

Researchers say up to 15 percent of patients may be able to use that same treatment to keep HIV at bay without the help of medication.

Thirty-four million people across the globe live with HIV, with almost three-fourths of new infections happening in developing countries.
