(KCEN) -- Thousands of people went to St. Peter's Square today for Pope Francis' inaugural mass.

The event was to formally install him as the new Pope.

After the Pope arrived in St. Peter's Square, he greeted the faithful for more than 30 minutes.

Then he was ushered into St. Peter's Basilica where the ceremony took place.

Lorie Brady, who made the pilgrimage to St. Peter's from Arkansas, said, "It's amazing. It's the universal church. It's the best representation of the universal church around the world, different languages spoken and flags everywhere and there's just a real palpable excitement."

Vice President Joe Biden and a U.S. delegation was also in attendance.
