(KCEN) -- The cheaper the healthy foods are, the more consumers buy.
Health researchers evaluated a program used in South Africa that offers rebates on the purchase of nutritious foods in grocery stores.
They found reducing the price of fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods by just 25 percent lead to a nine-percent increase in purchases of healthy foods.
With that, consumers bought fewer unhealthy foods like cookies, chips, soft drinks and high sodium products.
