(KCEN) -- Stricter firearm laws are now on the books in Colorado.
And they're the toughest in the country.
Those new laws expand background checks to include private purchases and online sales.
And they also limit the size of ammunition magazines to 15 rounds or eight shotgun shells.
All of this comes on the same day Colorado's Department of Corrections Executive Director was gunned down as he answered the door at his Denver home.
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said, "I think it's a coincidence, but incredibly tragic and sad coincidence that we have to process all this in single day."
The gun law measures were introduced in the Democratic-controlled state legislature early this year and passed quickly, putting Colorado among states at the front of the national gun control debate.
