(KCEN) -- In Washington, veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are demanding an end to the enormous backlog of veteran disability claims.
A recent report found wounded warriors are often forced to wait more than a year for benefits.
That's more than the 273 days reported by the VA.
In some cities the backlog is even worse, forcing many veterans to pay expenses out of pocket while they wait.
Paul Rieckhoff with the Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America said, "We need the President to step up and solve this problem once and for all."
Rep. Tim Walz of Minnesota said, "No citizen wants these warriors to come back and fight for what they have rightfully earned."
The VA says it's making changes like going paperless.
And it hopes to cut the wait to about 125 days by 2015.
