Military Sexual Assault Hearing

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- An alarming rise in military sexual assault cases continues to bring the issue front and center.

A government watchdog group recently found that the military did not properly investigate many sexual assault claims.

Earlier this year, the Defense Department estimated 26,000 cases of unwanted sexual contact took place in 2012.

In today's Pentagon briefing, the chief of naval operations says it's the biggest issue facing our armed forces.

ADM Jonathon Greenert says, "Lastly, a few words on what I call 'the challenge of our time,' sexual assault. We are in it for the long haul. This is something that we have to resolve and we will. We will stay at this."

An anonymous Navy Official says the Navy and Marine Corps have a new plan for cracking down on sexual assaults.

He says the organizations will begin publishing their own versions of a sex offenders list.
