Hasan Inspires Bill To Stop Pay Before Trials For Violent Crimes

Posted: Updated:

Lawmakers who are outraged that accused Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan is still getting paid a salary have introduced a new bill to stop it.

It's called the "Stop Pay for Violent Offenders Act," and it would change military law to prevent pay during pre-trial confinement for military offenders.

The bill is inspired by the fact that since the 2009 shooting, Hasan has collected nearly $300 thousand in pay.

One of the bill's authors calls it a huge oversight that allows military personal charged with serious crimes to be paid while they await trial.

Rep. Tim Griffin (R-Arkansas) said, "The fact that the sole suspect in this attack, Nidal Hasan, a Major in the U.S. Army, has continued to draw his Army salary – costing taxpayers more than $278,000 – is outrageous."

Under the bill withheld money could end up going to victims of the crimes.
