SGT Robert Bales Receives Life Sentence Without Parole

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Staff Sergeant Robert Bales was sentenced to life in prison for the massacre of 16 Afghan civilians last year.

A military judge sentenced Bales today.

Bales pleaded guilty in June in a deal to avoid the death penalty.

He took the witness stand yesterday and apologized for the pre dawn attack in March 2012, describing it as an act of cowardice.

The 40-year-old has no chance of parole.

Bales was serving his 4th combat deployment when he left his outpost in Afghanistan's Kandahar Province in the middle of the night to attack two villages.
