(KCEN) -- Smartphones and tablets could soon be so 2012.

That's what Samsung hopes at least.

The tech giant is coming out with a new smartwatch called Galaxy Gear.

Samsung co-CEO JK Shin unveiled the device at a trade show in Berlin on Wednesday.

The Galaxy Gear watch is not a phone.

Instead, it links up with Samsung's Galaxy smartphones and tablets to let users know when they receive a call, text message or e-mail.

The smartwatch features a 1.63 inch screen and runs on Google's Android operating system.

The Galaxy Gear costs $299 and will be available starting September 25.
