DFW Airport Fights Proposed Neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- A proposed neighborhood in Irving near Dallas could boost tax revenues in the city, but there's a catch.

It would be built on land that's right next to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

The airport is fighting the land's rezoning from industrial to residential.

They say residents would be exposed to high volumes of noise and heavy traffic.

But the mayor says there's a great demand for housing.

Mayor Beth Van Duyne says, "What I've found is people are starving in this area for single family homes. They want to be in Irving, then want to be in Coppell ISD."

The city's last rezoning vote ended in a four to four deadlock.

When it takes up the issue again, it will need a super majority of seven votes to change the zoning designation.

The airport has challenged eight development plans before and lost.
