Flu Vaccines Arrive in Central Texas

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) – It's that time of year again, the time where local doctor's offices warn about the unpredictable flu season that is right around the corner. Hospitals like Scott and White just received their vaccine shipment, and others like the Medicine Shoppe in Belton are already giving out shots.

"Flu season is the time of year where you need to take precaution. You need to come in preferably late September, early October," Medicine Shoppe Pharmacist Toby Young said. Don't wait. If you're healthy now come in and get the shot."

His Shoppe received the first wave of vaccines on Wednesday and already they've been giving out a few shots.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, manufacturers will produce between 135 million to 139 million flu vaccines in the U.S. for this season. Of those, around 30 million will be doses of quadrivalent vaccines.

The usual trivalent vaccine helps protect against the three main strains of flu. The new shot adds a fourth strain.

"There's an additional strain that's relatively new this year, but as far as the CDC is concerned they haven't come out and said that is their preference," Scott and White Dr. Alan Howell said. "It doesn't mean it's a better vaccine it's just another option."

Doctors recommend everyone one age six months and up get vaccinated, and especially high risk groups like adults 65 and over, or children under five-years-old.

Scott and White plans to start offering their flu vaccines in about three weeks.
