Benefit to Help Make Jayln's Wishes Come True

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) – People wearing "Team Jayln" shirts swarmed around the Barking Oak's Pet Resort in Temple on Saturday. They're goal? To help make more of Jayln's wishes come true.

Jayln Martin, 7,  has stage four brain cancer, and with her tumor growing doctors have only given her a few more months to live. This week her family has taken her off her chemo and radiation treatments so that Jayln can enjoy her last months fulfilling her wish list.

On Saturday, close family friend Robert Halford organized "We are pulling for you", a benefit and dog weight pulling contest. Dogs from all across the nation came to meet little Jayln and show her that even the smallest can be the strongest.

"She's a very strong girl. I love her to death and she's like one of my kids. It hurts me to see her hurting," Robert said.

In addition to the dog contest, there was also a Scott and White donation bus for people to give blood. "She's always in desperate need of blood and platelets," family member Sheila Poling said. "We're just giving a little of part of ourselves for her."

All the proceeds from the benefit will go to help make Jayln's wish list come true. So far several of her wishes have been granted including an upcoming beach trip, a scheduled visit to meet the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, and a surprise poodle puppy on her way.

Two more wishes were granted on Saturday including Killeen's Ashley Furniture donating a new bedroom set of Jayln's choice, and Jellystone Park opening back up for a week to allow Jayln and friends to meet Yogi Bear.

"It's hard to take in. I'm speechless," Jayln's father Nick Martin said. "I'm glad she has touched so many hearts the way she did."

But Jayln still has a few more items on her list, including her biggest wish to meet the crew on the TV show Duck Dynasty.

(KCEN) – While the homeless veteran count is dropping nationwide, Killeen and Temple are seeing a spike in the number of homeless veterans – and it's not just individual veterans. “We're seeing more homeless families, and we've seen an increase in that over the last few months because of the downsizing of the military,” Paula Wood said. “It's very sad to look a family in the eye and say do you have a friend or family member you can stay with because it's going to take a month to get you re-ho...More >>

(NBC) -- A federal judge Friday threw out new Texas abortion restrictions that would have effectively closed more than a dozen clinics in the state. U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel sided with clinics that sued over one of the most disputed measures of a sweeping anti-abortion bill signed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry in 2013. The ruling stops new restrictions that would have left just seven abortion facilities open in Texas by Sept. 1; there are currently 19 providers in Texas, according to th...More >>
