Medical Identity Theft on the Rise

Posted: Updated:

Medical identity theft is on the increase and the consequences can be costly. A  survey shows medical identify theft is up 20 percent within the last year. Nearly two million Americans have become victims of medical identity theft. And it is estimated victims nationwide will spend more than 12 billion dollars in out-of-pocket expenses to get the problem corrected.

This is an issue going undetected until a patient finds out their medical records have been changed.

Here are some ways you can protect your personal health information.

  • Always double-check your statement and explanation of benefit.
  • Obtain an annual summary of all the insurance benefits and services paid in your name to medical providers.
  • Report lost or stolen insurance cards immediately and shred any insurance related paperwork.
  • Be vigilant in providing your personal or insurance information, especially if medical services are offered for free
