Crews Salvage Costa Concordia

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Crews finally got to work salvaging the Costa Concordia off the coast of Italy.

The massive cruise ship ran aground and tipped over in January 2012.

32 people died. Two are still missing.

Crews are using a process known as parbuckling. That's where they sink portions of the ship deeper underwater before the vessel is pulled off the seabed.

Normally a ship like this would be dismantled or torn apart with explosives, but the ship is filled with toxins.

The ship's captain goes to trial next week. Frencesco Schettino is accused of causing the wreck, abandoning ship and its passengers, and manslaughter.
