McLennan County Hunger Groups Work to Beef Up Donations

Posted: Updated:

Central Texas food banks are down to their last few cans after a summer of limited donations and big demand.

Families that rely on free or reduced school lunches are out of luck when school's out, so the few donations that do come in during the hottest months go right back out the door.

Now the McLennan County Hunger Coalition and Caritas of Waco are getting creative to restock.

For Hunger Action Month through the end of September, the groups have planned a calendar of different ways to fight hunger in your area: things like starting a community garden or planning a food drive just for your neighborhood.

Basically, they're pushing anything to get people thinking about those in need, and the simple things they can do and give to help out.

"We're moving into the fall and the season of giving, but here at Caritas and here at the other agencies in our community, we do that seven days a week," said Esther Morales with the MCHC.

One of the easiest and most useful ways you can help is just by donating whatever you can manage, especially canned and boxed foods.

"For example macaroni and cheese, whipped potatoes, cereals, baby foods, those are all very, very important for us, and we go through so much of that," said Buddy Edwards, director of Waco Caritas.

"Jobs are hard to find out there," said Misty Crocker of Lacy Lakeview, who showed up at Caritas in Waco at least an hour and a half before it opened. "Especially with somebody who, you know, has got disabilities, ... it's even harder. Everybody tries to do the best they can, and this is the best I can right now."

A mobile food pantry from Austin also stopped on the TSTC campus for a couple hours Tuesday.
