Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) - There was a sea of pink at Heritage Park Saturday morning in Waco.

Susan G. Komen's Race for the Cure brought out thousands to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.

For the runners, their race takes maybe a couple of hours, but for the ladies in pink, the race never ends.

Shirley Gilliland is a 36 year cancer survivor. Out of the 100 survivor's at Saturday's race she has been battling cancer the longest. "I'm alive and well today, and very happy for it,' says Gilliland.

There may not be a cure for cancer, but Gilliland may have her own secret. She says, "I think the running has kept me going all these years."

Close to 2,000 people wore pink to help raise around $70,000 for breast cancer research. Their stories reminds us just how many people are affected by this deadly disease.

Race for the Cure wants to thank Shana Singletary and Jennifer Lopez for their generous donations for cancer research.
