New ID Policy Upsets Gun Rights Group

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Some say a new Fort Hood policy violates soldiers' gun rights.

The memo that went out to Fort Hood soldiers on Sept. 5 outlines a new policy requiring them to show ID to law enforcement when asked.

Its basis? Local soldiers' recent attempts to assert their gun rights in public.

The policy says if Fort Hood soldiers refuse to show their ID to police, they'll now be punished under military law.

Our state law only requires people to identify themselves if they're arrested.

The memo says the purpose of the new policy is to help officials determine whether a service member poses a threat, and whether they are carrying guns lawfully and safely.
