(KXAS) -- A Trinity Railway Express train struck a vehicle near State Highway 121 in northeast Fort Worth on Tuesday night.

TRE officials say the white Toyota Camry that was struck went around the lowered crossing arms at the Haltom Road intersection at about 6:40 p.m. A witness told NBC 5 the car went around the arms and tried to beat the train. The train clipped the back of the car.

Three people in the vehicle were taken to local hospitals. MedStar EMS said a woman in her late 30s or early 40s in critical condition and a man in his 20s were taken to John Peter Smith Hospital. A woman in her late 30s or early 40s was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital.

Their names were not immediately released.

The Fort Worth and Haltom City fire departments responded to the crash scene. Fort Worth firefighters used an infrared camera to search for any victims who may have been thrown from the car.

Haltom City Fire Deputy Chief Fred Napp said collisions between cars and trains rarely result in just a little bit of damage.

"If a car hits a train or a train hits a car, there's going to be some serious damage, and if you're in that car, there's going to be some serious injuries," he said.

None of the 64 people on the TRE train were injured. They were bused to the next train stop.

TRE trains resumed normal service at about 9 p.m.
