(KCEN) -- The Texas Department of Public Safety troopers made more than 1,600 DWI arrests during a special enforcement period, which included Labor Day.

The targeted DWI enforcement spanned over 18 days.

"DPS works every day to help make Texas roadways safer for all travelers, and taking dangerous drivers off the road significantly improves our ability to achieve that goal," said DPS Director Steven McCraw. "Thanks to this Labor Day enforcement period, officers were able to remove impaired drivers from highways and prevent potentially deadly crashes."

DPS made 1,682 DWI arrests during the Labor Day enforcement. Also, more than 24,440 speeding citations, 3,540 seat belt/child safety seat citations, 1,223 fugitive arrests and 977 felony arrests were made during that time.
