No Halloween Candy for Chubby Kids: Woman's Reported Trick-or-Treat Plans Anger Parents

Posted: Updated:

(KXAS) -- No Halloween candy for chubby kids?

That's what one woman is reportedly saying, and her stance has incited a heated debate among parents and kids alike.

A woman in Fargo, N.D., told a local radio station she plans to hand out a letter, instead of bite-sized treats, to trick-or-treaters she deems too overweight to receive candy, NBC affiliate KVLY reported.

"Your child is, in my opinion, moderately obese and should not be consuming sugar and treats to the extent of some children this Halloween season," she says in the letter she told Fargo radio station Y-94 she plans to give parents.

"I just want to send a message to the parents of kids that are really overweight. I think it's just really irresponsible to send them out looking for free candy just 'cause all the other kids are doing it," the woman, who identified herself only as Cheryl, reportedly told the station.

Some parents are balking at the idea. One told KVLY the letter was "inappropriate," another said overweight kids have suffered enough for their weight and another said other people's kids' weight was none of the woman's problem.

But she told Y-94 she disagrees. "I'm contributing to their health problems, and really, their kids are everybody's kids. It's a whole village," she told Y-94, according to KVLY.

Some have raised the possibility that the reported letter could be a publicity stunt. Such stunts have been suspected on Y-94 before, as last year, when a caller insisted that she thought deer crossing signs did not warn drivers of deer but instead encouraged deer to cross roads.

The program director for Y-94 did not immediately return a request for comment Wednesday.

(NBC) -- A federal judge Friday threw out new Texas abortion restrictions that would have effectively closed more than a dozen clinics in the state. U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel sided with clinics that sued over one of the most disputed measures of a sweeping anti-abortion bill signed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry in 2013. The ruling stops new restrictions that would have left just seven abortion facilities open in Texas by Sept. 1; there are currently 19 providers in Texas, according to th...More >>
