Belton Child Care Center Shuts down Abruptly, Parents and Employees Outraged

Posted: Updated:
BELTON, TX -

(KCEN) – On Wednesday Belton parents were left scrambling to find a place for their children to stay, while employees at the Milestones Educational Child Care Center were left unemployed.

"I don't know what happened," Jennifer Vasek said through tears. "I lost my job. I have lost my child care, and apparently I've lost two and a half weeks worth of wages."

With little to no warning, Milestones was shutdown "effective immediately" as the signs read on the door Wednesday morning. The assistant director confirmed the reason behind the abrupt shutdown was the owner filed for bankruptcy.

The only thing employees received was an email sent late Tuesday night stating: "Effective immediately Milestones Educational Child Care is CLOSED for business. All employees are encouraged to file for unemployment. Effective termination date of 10/20/2013."

"This is insane. The doors should have been open, there should have been an explanation, and there should have been an apology," Jennifer said.

Jennifer isn't the only one who feels cheated. Many of the parents are outraged, and don't know if or when they'll be reimbursed for the hundreds of dollars they've paid in tuition.

Ashley Norman just paid nearly $600 for the month of November. "My husband is in school, I'm the one working right now, and it's not like I can just go pay another $600 for day care for the month," she said. "It's like a slap in the face because it didn't' show they cared about the children, the parents or the teachers."

Earlier on Wednesday a notice was posted on Milestones' door with a lawyer's number for parents or employees who had questions. When KCEN called the number, we were told "no comment" and that he attorney handling the case was in court all day. He has yet to return our calls.

We also reached out to the owner of the day care. Her cell phone went straight to voicemail with a full mailbox.

While questions continue to go unanswered, parents are still unsure when they can pick up their children's belongings locked inside the building. The assistant director says a new notice will be posted sometime between 24 and 48 hours. That notice will tell parents when they can pick up their items.

(CNN) -- It may be possible to rewire your brain so that it wants -- craves, even -- healthier foods. How? By following a healthy diet. We know, that wasn't the quick fix to afternoon ice cream binges you were hoping for. But this research could lead to a more sci-fi solution to the obesity epidemic. In a pilot study published Monday in the journal Nutrition Diabetes, scientists say that changing your eating behavior can actually change how your brain reacts to high-calorie and low-calori...More >>
