Military Matters - High Volume Of Rape Cases

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- The sexual assault epidemic in the military is all but taking over its court system.

According to the army's electronic dockets, just over 60 percent of the cases set to go to trial on Fort Hood between now and April are sexual assault or rape cases.

Here's how it breaks down.

Out of 19 defendants listed, 12 of them are in trouble for those crimes.

Fort Hood officials say they can't confirm whether any of them are connected.

Unfortunately it seems to be the trend at some of the other large US Military installations.

At Fort Bragg about 40 percent of troops on trial are accused of sexual assault.

And at Fort Campbell that number is also at 40 percent.

While shocking, these numbers aren't entirely surprising.

The Pentagon estimated that sexual assaults among the ranks skyrocketed to 26,000 last year.
