(KXAS) -- At least two dozen people were transported to the hospital after a bus traveling from Los Angeles to Dallas crashed early Thursday morning.

According to Arizona Department of Public Safety officials, a Greyhound bus carrying 48 passengers crashed on eastbound Interstate 10 near Tonopah, AZ around 1:45 a.m. Thursday.

Arizona DPS troopers said the crash was caused by a male in his 20's who attacked the bus driver before the bus came to a stop and then fled with his reported girlfriend.

According to law enforcement, other passengers came to the aid of the driver and were able to stop the bus from entering oncoming traffic and helped guide the bus off the road.

Two dozen people were transported to Arizona hospitals for their injuries suffered in the crash, including three who were taken by air ambulance for serious injuries. Westbound lanes of I-10 had to be closed for half an hour while helicopters landed to transport victims.

Of the three taken for serious injuries, one suffered a back injury, one suffered fractures to their lower body, and one was involved in subduing the suspect and had injuries not revealed by Arizona authorities.

Police arrested 25-year-old Maquel Donyel Morris for the alleged attack. Morris faces 48 counts of Felony Endangerment, 24 counts of Assault, and 3 counts of Aggravated Assault.

The bus left Los Angeles at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday and was scheduled to stop around 2:30 a.m. in Phoenix, AZ, before heading to its final destination of Dallas.
