Friday Morning Standstill on I-35

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- The weather Friday morning was causing major delays all across Central Texas.

Police were responding to multiple accidents from overnight. From 5:30 p.m. on Thursday to 2:30 a.m. on Friday, Temple Police responded to over 55 accidents.

Cars were built up along southbound I-35 for miles Friday morning after roads refroze overnight creating icy conditions.

Going from the Temple to Waco, accidents were being reported overnight and all Friday morning.

A driver said that she experienced an 18-wheeler swerving out of control in front of her and almost hitting the cars around her.

Drivers heading from the Waco area on I-35 needed to either leave extremely early or take another route, because cars did not move for hours.

Driving in Killeen was not much better. Drivers there said that roads were icy and conditions were not favorable to drive. The W.S. Young bridge in Killeen was shut down early Thursday night as a result from the ice. It did not reopen until Friday afternoon.

Police were urging people to stay off the roads unless you absolutely needed to drive somewhere.

Because of the impassable traffic on I-35, TxDOT was not able to get to get out to spread sand until late morning.

Traffic on I-35 southbound was not able to return to a stable pace until early afternoon.

And after the treacherous driving conditions early Friday morning, Meteorologists expect a refreeze on roadways overnight Friday and early Saturday morning.
