Cost of first class stamps temporarily increases

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Starting today it will cost you more to send a letter.

First class stamps will now cost $0.49 - a three cent temporary price hike.

The temporary increase is part of the Postal Service's effort to recover from severe mail decreases - blamed on the 2008 economic depression.

The Postal Service says the rate hike will last no more than two years, though inflation over that time could make it permanent.

The postal service is trying to recoup $2.8 billion in losses.

Forever stamps are still good for first class postage.
