Three Dogs Die in Morning Fire in Belton

Posted: Updated:

A morning structure fire turns tragic.

The fire started around 10 Monday morning in the 4300 block of Mulberry Drive in Belton, near Stillhouse Hollow Lake.

The building was a barn behind a mobile home, but two people were living there.

Neither of them was home when it started, but some of their animals weren't so lucky.

Firefighters uncovered three dogs who didn't make it out, including an eight-week-old puppy.

High winds spread the flames quickly, and left the couple homeless.

"It was primarily tin and scrap wood used to build it and the wind caught hold of it and it just went really fast," said Dale Hammerschmidt with the Stillhouse Fire Department.

"That was our shelter, fixing' it up, me and my husband," said Kelly English, who lived in the barn with her husband. "Someone might let us stay a night or two, or, really I don't know. That was the only place we had."

The fire was contained to the barn itself. The Bell County fire marshal is still investigating the cause.

No injuries were reported.
