State of the Union Topics

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Tomorrow night is President Obama's State of the Union speech.

But after the healthcare.gov disaster and another year of gridlock in congress, the public's view of the president and congress are at historic lows.

To get people to tune in to his speech, President Obama posted a promo on Vine.

His State of the Union guests could attract viewers, but the republican party called the speech a rerun.

"I at least want the American people to understand that while this president enjoys giving speeches -- he doesn't actually enjoy following thru on his promises," said Republican National Committee chairman Renice Priebus.

59% disapprove of the president's handling of Obamacare, in the new ABC-Washington Post poll.

55% disapprove of his handling of the economy.

Closing the economic gap between the middle class and the rich will be an Obama focus, and immigration reform; both initiatives stymied by partisan battling in congress.

Political expert Darrell West says gridlock could get worse; it's an election year.

"Getting things done means compromise and negotiation," Darrell West said. "Unfortunately in today's world, people define compromise as selling our your principles, and that can become a problem in a party primary."

Congress did just compromise on a budget.

The president will call for more of that.
