Philip Seymour Hoffman Found Dead From Apparent Overdose

Posted: Updated:

(NBC NEWS) --- Academy Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his apartment Sunday. He was 46.

Hoffman had roles in Patch Adams, Twister, Moneyball, Almost Famous and The Big Lebowski, but it was his role as writer Truman Capote in the biopic Capote that earned him his Oscar. He is also involved in the Hunger Games movie franchise, which is still filming.

Hoffman died of a suspected drug overdose. CNN reported Hoffman was found with a needle in his arm and heroin was found in the apartment. His body was discovered Sunday shortly before noon Eastern, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hoffman had struggled with drug addiction in previous years, including a stint in rehab in 2013. He was also the subject a recent death hoax that was debunked by his representatives Saturday – the day before his body was discovered.

Hoffman was born July 23, 1967, and was nominated for four Oscars and three Tonys. He leaves behind three children, ages 10, 7 and 5.

Described as an "actor's actor" and praised his range and depth, many of Hoffman's characters were complex and emotional. He was working on directing his second movie at the time of his death, and his body was discovered by a screenwriter who had access to his apartment. However, the nature of their collaboration wasn't immediately known.

He had recently appeared at the Sundance Film Festival in January to promote God's Pocket, in which he had a lead role.
