Car Burglaries On The Rise In Belton

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN)—Belton Police say there have been 25 car burglaries in the last month. 18 reported in North Belton and another 7 in South Belton.

In all incidents, police say the vehicles were unlocked. Now Belton P.D. is trying to spread the word, and stop what they call a crime of opportunity.

"We believe none of these would have happened if people had locked their doors," says Belton City Official Paul Romer. "It's as simple as that, lock your door and you won't be a victim."

The break-ins are happening overnight in residential areas. The criminals are apparently focusing on cars that are parked on the street. It also doesn't matter whether items are visible inside the car or hidden.

"Sometimes it's visible but they are going through glove compartments and looking for stuff," says Romer.

Police are asking anyone with information to text Crime Tips at 254-421-4433.
