Rollover in Salado Kills Teen

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- A Round Rock teen is dead after a rollover on I35 near the mile marker 278 in Salado.

A State Trooper witnessed the crash as he was working another wreck just 100 yards away. He says the driver of the suburban lost control on the icy overpass and flipped down the embankment along north I35.

The right middle passenger in the back was a 16-year-old girl. Troopers say she was not wearing a seat belt and she was ejected as the suburban rolled down the hill. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Seven other children and an adult were also in the vehicle. The children were transported to the McLane's Children's Hospital, and the mother was taken to Scott and White. Troopers say they all had varying injuries.

With ice being a factor, Troopers want to remind everyone to drive slow, give enough space between you and the car in front of  you, and to always wear  your seatbelt.

"Put your kids in seatbelts please," Trooper Michael Chapmen pleaded. "Seatbelts save more lives than they take."

Troopers say the Round Rock family was traveling to Dallas to visit family.
