Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- The chancellor for the University of Texas is stepping down.

Francisco Cigarroa says he will resign after five years of leading the 15-campus system.

He now wants to practice medicine full time.

In a news conference on Monday, Cigarroa said he will be the head of pediatric surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Cigarroa was the system's first Hispanic leader.

The 56-year-old is expected to stay on the job until his replacement is found.
