Brides offer tips for planning on a budget

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Your wedding day is a special event you will never forget -- but it's probably the most expensive party you'll ever throw.

The average cost of an American wedding is $26,000.

Here are ways you can get around that price and still create a fairytale experience.

Allison Conners is newly engaged -- and dreaming about the big day.

"I have so many ideas in my head that I want it to look like and hopefully everything I want will tie in and look good together," Conners said.

She's getting a head start and planning well in advance. "We're planning for March 7 of next year, so we have a little bit over a year to plan the whole wedding."

Her coordinator from Vivid Events, Giselle Callahan, says this is the ideal amount of time to plan a wedding if you want to save money.

"The further in advance you plan, the more money you can save," Callahan said. Different companies throughout the year have sales."

For brides, timing is everything.

Especially with those first big choices -- when and where you'll have your wedding.

"Certain venues will give a discount based on the month of the year, if it's a slower month, then you'll get a better price," Callahan said. "Friday and Sunday weddings typically get a better price."

Off-months in central Texas are January to February because of rain chances and July to August because of the heat.

Looking through bridal magazines and tips on Pinterest can help you find ways to save. But if you're on a tight budget the best way to really cut costs is to cut the guest list.

If you have fewer guests, that's going to be fewer invitations, less food, fewer linens, fewer centerpieces. If you pull down the number of guests you're having, you can have a much nicer wedding on a budget.

But what about everything in between?

Flowers, food, decorations.

Bride Jessica Tanner says budgeting is deciding what you care most about.

"I have a photo booth for the day and that's fun and that's big to me. I think it just depends on what's important to you," Tanner said. "You don't have to spend a thousand dollars on flowers if you don't want to."

While Conners is at the beginning of planning, she's already making those choices. She is considering cupcakes as a cheaper alternative to multiple cakes for her big wedding. But she's enjoying figuring it out.

"I'm very excited! I wish it was already here," Conners said. "I'm so excited I just can't wait."
