Tax Preparation Tips

Posted: Updated:

Tax season is the time of year that everyone seems to dread, but whether you like it or not, it's time to file.

Even though you have two months, tax preparers say to get it done soon.

If you've filed on your own before, you may want to consider "E-File," the program on the IRS website.

They say it can help you get a refund check quicker, but if you're not sure what you're doing, you're probably better off getting a little help.

That way, you don't miss out on any deductions you may qualify for.

Big companies like H&R Block and Jackson-Hewitt will cost you anywhere from $30 to hundreds, but it could be worth it when you get that return check.

At University High School in Waco, there are over 65 students recognized by the IRS to file your taxes and they say now is the time to start.

Student tax preparer Yanely Duarte says they're ready to help anyone who needs it.

"We have a lot of people who wait till the last minute and that's when we get really busy, so it may take a lot longer for them to get their taxes done," Duarte said.

"It doesn't really matter how much you're going to get back, but it probably does matter how quickly you get it back," said tax prep teacher DeDe Moore. "The longer you wait, probably the longer it's gonna take."

The student tax preparation at the high school is completely free, if you're looking to save some cash.

They'll be at the school every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evening from 5:00-8:00PM.
