Experts Warn Of Romance Scams

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- As we approach Valentine's Day, cyber thieves are taking "Be Mine" to a new level.

Experts are warning those looking to steal hearts this Friday to beware of those looking to steal their identity or their money.

Better Business Bureau Regional Director Helen Moore said the most common scams making the rounds this year are on dating web sites where criminals create fake identities, form a relationship, and then ask for money.

She also said if you're ordering flowers online to make sure that the site is going to guarantee the delivery date, that the flowers you order are exactly what you'll get and that you're placing your order on a secure web site.

"It's a time where people are happy to have somebody to send flowers or candy to and you might not be as suspicious as you might be at other times," Moore said.

Moore also encourages people to be leery when using social media and Valentine's Day apps. She said some messages may lead you to sites that will imbed malware onto your computer or mobile device and try to collect your personal information.
