Kabul International Airport Lockdown

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- The Base here at Kabul International Airport went on lockdown at  8 a.m. local time, about 9:30 p.m. Texas time, due to a bomb scare.

Regular duties resumed about an hour and a half later.

We've been staying on the base for the past several days, and it's the headquarters for International  Joint Command.

A suspicious package was found in the northwest corner of the base.

Our building is actually one of two named in the vicinity of where the suspicious item was found.

When it happened, we were getting ready for breakfast, and  men in Kevlar came in and pulled a fire alarm.

They told us to go to a designated area.

I don't want to name exactly where that safe location is for security purposes.

We were all told to stay clear 300 meters of the area.

Security here is run by the Jordanians.

Explosive Ordinance Disposal  is run by the French.

We don't know at this point what exactly was done to eliminate the problem and inspect that package,
but we did see dogs patrolling our building when the lockdown was lifted.

This is yet anther reminder that the danger here is very real and that forces are on alert.

Just a few days ago, on February 10, two American civilians were killed by a car bomb just 12 miles from here.

That same day, an ISAF service member was killed by a direct fire attack.

Stay tuned for updates.
