84-Year-Old Belton Woman Loses Long-Time Home to Fire

Posted: Updated:

An 84-year-old Belton woman is without a home after a Thursday morning fire.

Firefighters got the call around 8:30 from the 100 block of East Avenue C. The house was fully engulfed by the time they got there.

It took about 25 minutes before they had it under control.

The fire is under investigation, but the house appears to be a total loss.

The 84-year-old woman, Ruth Drake, had been living there for 60 years.

She's in a wheelchair, so a man living with her helped get her out safely.

"He was in his room, she was in the bathroom, and she hollered at him and they got out," said Timothy Cehand, Drake's grandson. "That's the main thing. [The house] can be rebuilt, but she can't be replaced."

"Lot of memories," Drake said after she got settled in a neighbor's house. "I don't want to leave. I want to stay here and watch it," she added, trying to hold back tears.

No one was hurt, and the woman's puppy also made it out safe.

The house is not livable, so the Red Cross was called to help her out.
