Baby Orangutan Coming To Cameron Park Zoo

Posted: Updated:

A baby makes three at the Cameron Park Zoo.

Orangutans Mei and KJ are expecting their first child on May 22, 2014.

This is Mei's first pregnancy and zookeepers are doing everything they can to prepare.

Orangutans are an endangered species and they only have a baby about every eight years.

They're working on maternal training with Mei every day. They do this so she knows how to take care of the baby orangutan when he or she makes the big arrival.

"If she doesn't take care of it for some reason, if she doesn't produce the right kind of milk, if she doesn't wanna let it nurse, we've got training in place to help us help her take care of her own baby," said zookeeper Laura Laverick.

Zookeepers will work around the clock the last few weeks of her pregnancy.

They want to be there for the birth, ready to jump in and help if they need to.
