TPD Investigates Fatal Dog Attack

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) – A two-year-old girl is dead after sustaining severe injuries from a dog her parents were keeping for an acquaintance.

It was around 11:30 on Monday when officers received a call regarding a dog bite on. Avenue M. As they responded to the call, another officer who was conducting an unrelated investigation notified dispatch that a small child had been admitted to the Scott and White emergency department after reportedly being attacked by a dog.

Officers determined that both calls stemmed from the same location.

The dog involved in the attack was a Pit bull. The girl's family was watching the Pit bull for an acquaintance and had secured it in the backyard.

Two-year-old Je'vaeh Mayes  entered the yard without the parents' knowledge. At some point the dog attacked the child, resulting in life-threatening injuries.

Upon discovering the toddler, the parents immediately transported her to Scott and White Hospital.  Despite the efforts by attending physicians, Je'Vaeh succumbed to her injuries.

Officers from the City of Temple Animal Control Services have confiscated the dog, and it is currently being held in quarantine.  The investigation into the incident remains active.
