10-Year-Old Says “Make a Stand” Against Child Slavery

(KXAN) -- "When life gives you lemons, change the world!"

That's the motto of 10-year-old Vivienne Harr, who inspired a movement that has raised more than a million dollars to help fight child slavery.  The self-proclaimed "Lemonpreneur" is the star of a documentary film that premiered in Austin Tuesday.

A photography exhibit moved Vivienne to action.  Her father tells a story of how she saw a photo of two children with giant rocks strapped to their backs and said, "They should be playing."

Vivienne told her parents she wanted to help, and suggested a lemonade stand as a way to start.  She set up the stand on her street corner and handed out cups for 365 days, rain or shine.  Along the way she realized her original business model of selling the lemonade for $2 per cup wasn't working.

"We made it free – just pay what's in your heart," said Vivienne.  "And it just started up and up and up."

On day #173, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg welcomed Vivienne to set up her stand in Times Square.  That's where she reached her goal, donating $101,320 to Not For Sale, a leading anti-slavery organization.

But she's far from finished.  Vivienne's organization, Make a Stand, Inc., has raised more than $1 million.  She travels the country, encouraging other children to make their own stands, bottles and sells her organic lemonade in nearly 200 grocery stores and is the star of a new documentary film,#Standwithme.

Vivienne will be giving live demonstrations with her lemonade Wednesday at Austin Central Market stores.  She'll be at the North Lamar location from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m and at the Westgate location from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
